Reach One

I had a GREAT morning at our local high school where I volunteer cheer coach. I was asked to speak to a Journalism/Creative Writing class on “The Writing Process.”  Shout-out to my fab author friends for sharing their tips and suggestions with me!

I loved it. I hope they loved it. I know there were a couple that loved it.

But the truth is, you never really know who you influence. Who you touch.

You may never know.

But I think it’s true that while you want to impress everyone and have everyone like you, if you can reach one, you’ve won.

I never found this more true than after publishing The Cinderella Rule. Of course I want it on every bookshelf, in everyone’s e-reader. Of course I want it to do so well that the publisher asks me to write its sequel.

But even if that never happens, I won. God won.

God expanded my territory, and people who didn’t already know me were touched. Inspired. Changed.

…and thankfully, a few people shared their experience with me. Any time I feel discouraged, I remember that God has already used my book and words to help others.

And that’s what it is all about.

To those of you who spoke (or wrote!) these kind words to me, I hope you don’t mind my sharing them. I think on them often and God uses your words as a means of consistent encouragement.

“After suffering through a tough break up last week, I went to Lifeway and sat in the relationship aisle. I definitely judge a book by it’s cover, but knew I had to read it just because it had Cinderella in the title. I read this book within a couple hours and cannot wait to read it again…it was so encouraging, so true, and gave me the assurance that God will guide a gentleman to me.”

“I am so thankful that you spoke to our girls at _______ Church. I am one of the sponsors for the middle school, many of the girls call me “Dad” and I try to be like a dad to them and look after them. My real daughter left with a smile on her face and can’t wait to get your book. The other girls (my other daughters) loved what you had to say and even said they learned a lot. They had a great time. ”

“Your book is Biblical, candid, relevant, important, and so much fun to read. It pointed out everything I’d done wrong in my past relationships. It felt like talking to my best friend! I cried, smiled, laughed, and shook my head in frustration and affirmation. It made me rethink my whole dating game plan strategy. I’m the prize. My next boyfriend/future husband must pursue me wholeheartedly when God brings us together!”
