Power of Makeup series, Part 6: Mascara & Beauty Bag Sneak Peek

We’re nearing the end of the Power of Makeup series and I’m thrilled to talk about my favorite makeup product ever — MASCARA!!!

My rule of thumb: 2 coats of mascara for the daytime. 3 coats…or 4 or 5…for night. I usually do 2-3 for day!

Mascara is the icing on the cake, if you will. It finishes out and completes your look. It makes you look more sophisticated and glamorous. If you have blond-tipped lashes like me, mascara is your new best buddy.

Unfortunately, I hear a lot of women say that mascara is difficult for them to put on and can be a little scary.

I totally get that.

I’ve poked my eyeball with a mascara wand and it hurts! But with practice, that will rarely happen. Before you apply, make sure there are no children, pets, or ornery husbands nearby to bump your arm!

application

1. Place your mascara wand against the base of your lash line.

2. Wiggle the brush a little to deposit a lot of color at the base of your lashes.

3. Swoop upwards. Voila!

4. For bottom lashes, many recommend to hold the brush vertically, but that clumps my lashes together. I hold it horizontally, just like with the upper lashes, and lightly sweep down (shown in above pic).

4. Repeat!!!  I rarely double coat my bottom lashes, but to each his own! Let the mascara dry a little in between coats.

5. Grab your lash curler and curl those puppies. Using a lash curler makes your eyes look wider and bigger.

I love the thick fringe that mascara adds to lashes!

Different mascaras do different things, so pay attention to what the brand is advertising. Wand sizes matter, as well. A skinny thin wand is for defining and lengthening. A thick wand is for volumizing.

Here are the mascaras currently in my arsenal. I don’t use them all every day, and in fact, should probably get rid of most of them. Replacing mascara every 3-4 months is key!

These mascaras are in order of least favorite to ultimate favoritest. One mascara not pictured that I used to wear a lot was Thick ‘n Full by Cover Girl (I think it was Cover Girl). It left my lashes dark and soft.

mascaras in order pm

1. Cover Girl Clump Crusher
*had to use a million coats to get the darkness and volume I wanted*

2. Mary Kay Lash Love
*my sister’s fave. Looks great on her. Doesn’t give me the volume I want.*

3. Clinique Lash Doubling
*Gift with Purchase. Dark and nice.*

4. Chantecaille Faux Cils
*another free sample. It’s okay.*

5. Benefit’s BAD gal lash
*makes lashes dark and thick*

6. Too Faced Lash Injection
*free gift – may like better if it was a full tube. Don’t feel like I get enough on the wand*

7. Mary Kay Ultimate
*great mascara. wore for two years exclusively*

8. Too Faced Size Queen
*2nd favorite ever. Always got compliments on how long my lashes looked.*

9. Too Faced Better than Sex
*If you’ve read my book, you know how I feel about this name*
BEST mascara EVER. EVER. EVER. Thickens, lengthens, darkens, and the best part — it’s buildable, meaning I can layer coats without clumping. I LOVE it.

Beauty Bag Sneak Peek

I also promised a sneak peek inside my beauty bag. These are products that I carry with me almost everywhere. It’s my emergency kit. I lost my original bag earlier this year during our Delta mishap. Ugh. So I had to replace all my products. I still haven’t replaced my lip glosses and it makes me sad.

In tomorrow’s final Power of Makeup series: Lips, I’ll go through the Beauty Bag and share these awesome products, and why they are must-haves in anyone’s beauty bag!
