Day 6: Eating before Public Speaking

stop binge-eating, bethanyjett.com

[guestpost]This is not a health & fitness blog, but when I saw the #Write31Days Challenge, I knew I wanted to pick a topic that I struggled with. In order to lead a Brilliant Life, the stress-eating has to stop. Welcome to the 31 Days to Stop Binge-Eating collection. Glad you’re here! #LiveBrilliant[/guestpost]Tonight I’m speaking a pregnancy crisis center fundraiser and I am beyond jazzed. But with public speaking comes nervous jitters and delicate tummies. I definitely won’t binge-eating tonight, unless it’s after the fundraiser. Bring it on.

Tips for Eating Before Public Speaking

To prepare for tonight’s talk, I ate a balanced breakfast of cheerios and almond milk before noshing on some peanut butter crackers for a little bit of protein (yes, it’s slight). At a recent conference (and after some online reading), I learned a few tips.

  1. Back off the caffeine/water combo before speaking. Caffeine is a diuretic, after all. No need to go potty when you’re on stage. How embarrassing!
  2. Eat about one-and-a-half to two hours before taking the stage.
  3. Drink water with electrolytes (or Crystal Lite)…I can’t remember from my notes! An Ear/Nose/Throat specialist gave us so many great tips at the Christian Communicator’s Conference this year. I should have brought them with me!
  4. Do some breathing exercises and vocal warm-ups. Not eating related, but hey.

All in all, I’m pretty excited…and hoping that the pre-talk butterflies subside. I was gonna say “wish me luck,” but instead let’s go with “break a leg.”

On second thought, I’ll probably pig out tonight once the talk is over, but I’ll watch what I’m eating and definitely won’t binge. This online accountability is working better than I expected.

Oh!

Soooooo…this was super fun. I have wanted a treadmill for forever. I think I mentioned it on Day 3’s post. I texted Justin and told him I wanted to get one, where I would put it, and what I would do with it if we had fancy company over. The majority of our friends and family won’t mind seeing a treadmill, so that’s not really a problem.

Anyway…with Hurricane Matthew about to cause destruction in Florida, I decided to wait on having it shipped. One less package for Amazon to worry about during this mess. Today, I got online to order it, knowing it would take a few extra days to ship.

It was no longer offered with Amazon Prime or sold by Amazon.

Boo.

I’m so bummed by this, but I figure maybe this is God’s way of telling me to wait. My friend and big sis Michelle suggested I go to Play It Again Sports, so that’s on my agenda once the storm clears.

Plea and Prayer

For my friends and family in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, please please take Hurricane Matthew seriously and stay safe.
